Caravaggio Wheelchair Accessible Tours
Perhaps not everyone knows that in his short but tormented life Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, spent a short but intense period in Sicily, and more precisely from October 1608 to October 1609.
These were difficult years for the artist, who he has been on the run for some time now to escape capital punishment.
Caravaggio will stay in 3 different cities in Sicily, plus a short period in Malta not far from it, leaving masterpieces that we can still almost entirely admire today.
And we say "almost" because if the life of what we could consider one of the greatest artists of all time was quite tormented, the life of his works was no less so.
Caravaggio In Malta
Caravaggio became a Knight of the Order , and for it he created several works of fundamental importance for his own artistic and personal journey, and certainly for the history of art.
Such as The Decapitation of Saint John the Baptist and the Portrait of Alof de Vignacourt and his court ( now in the Louvre ) and St Jerome Writing.
But it is also known that in 1608 he was arrested, imprisoned, and expelled from the order.
Caravaggio In Messina
In December 1608 Caravaggio was in Messina.
In the city of the Strait he created two works which both are located in the Regional Museum of the city.
The Resurrection of Lazarus was commissioned by Giovan Battista Lazzaro for the Crociferi Church in Messina.
The second work that Caravaggio created in Messina is the Adoration of the Shepherds for the Church of Santa Maria of the Concezione.
Here Caravaggio is inspired by the typical Franciscan nativity scene, with the presence of the ox and the donkey, as well as Giuseppe's work tools.
Caravaggio In Palermo
And we arrive at Caravaggio's most controversial work in Sicily: the Nativity with Saints Lorenzo and Francis.
This work sadly became famous because in 1969 it was robbed and never found again.
It is an altarpiece that was located inside the Oratory of San Lorenzo in Palermo, surrounded by the beautiful stuccoes of Giacomo Serpotta.
Today at the Oratory of San Lorenzo you can still admire a faithful copy of the work, which in some way brings us back to the original atmosphere that one must have felt at the time in which the work was created.
Caravaggio In Siracusa
After escaping from Malta, Caravaggio arrives in Sicily, in Siracusa, to his friend Mario Minniti who offers him hospitality.
Here the artist, in addition to having given the name to the Ear of Dionysius, history and legend of the symbolic place of Siracusa, created the altarpiece of the Burial of Saint Lucia.
